Sarah Clausen is a saxophonist, sound artist, and composer based in Chicago, IL. Using woodwinds, synthesizers, and electronics, Sarah evokes much of the unexplainable feelings of warmth, depth, and nostalgia of the human experience through her compositions and soundscapes.
Utilizing space, unique melodic content, and diverse woodwind textures, Sarah has developed an approach to improvisation and composition that is forward moving, and inspired by many musical traditions. While completing her Bachelor’s of Music in Jazz Performance at Northern Illinois University, Sarah studied under renowned Chicago saxophonist Geof Bradfield, and has had the opportunity to work with artists such as Anna Webber, Jon Finlayson, Maria Grand, Jon Irabagon, John O’Gallager, James Falzone, and Greg Ward. Sarah has performed solo and with groups under her direction at the Chicago Jazz Festival, Hyde Park Jazz Festival, and the Catalytic Sound Festival, and frequently performs at notable venues in Chicago.
As a collaborator, she frequently works with avant-folk artist Hannah Frances as a composer/arranger, music director and performer. With this ensemble, Sarah has performed and directed at Kilby Court Music Festival, Constellation Chicago, and National Sawdust.
In addition to completing her Jazz Studies B.A., Sarah has also had years of studying classical saxophone repertoire and techniques under the tutelage of Tom Snydacker, composing methods with Dr. David Maki, and electronic music production with Dr. Philip Sink.
Sarah has led workshops and performed in the faculty jazz band at Birch Creek Music Performance Center. She also teaches saxophone and clarinet at all levels to all ages out of her own private studio. Please see contact page for inquiries.
